ASOPRS Fellowships

The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) accredits and maintains post-graduate fellowship programs that train qualified physicians in the art and science of oculofacial plastic surgery.  These highly competitive two-year full-time fellowship positions are affiliated with prestigious academic institutions in the US and Canada. Graduates of these programs are eligible for membership in ASOPRS following completion of oral and written examinations and submission of an approved thesis.  Fellowship applicants must have completed an ACGME-approved ophthalmology residency and be eligible for medical licensure in the state or province of the fellowship.  In addition, a small number of fellowships are designated for international ophthalmologists who intend to return to their home country.

ASOPRS Fellowships are divided into “even” and “odd” year groups. Most programs train one fellow and operate on an “even” or “odd” year cycle.  A few programs will train two fellows—one starting an odd year, one starting an even year—each with a separate official ASOPRS Program Director.

Fellowship Match

All fellowships participate in the SF Match.  Some fellowships will have independent deadlines with additional application materials; applicants should check with each program to which they intend to apply.  ASOPRS fellowships participate in an “early” match. The process begins approximately two years prior to the intended start date. For applicants who plan to start fellowship right after residency, the process takes place during the second year of residency, (PGY-3) Applications are due in the early fall. Interviews take place throughout the winter and rank lists are due in early spring.  Match Day occurs shortly thereafter, approximately 15 months prior to the start date. In order to successfully complete this accelerated match process, potential applicants are encouraged to obtain significant exposure to oculofacial plastics early in their residency training.

Details about each of the ASOPRS-accredited fellowships can be found in the Fellowship Directory. All have met the rigorous Society guidelines for comprehensive training and experience in diseases and deformities that encompass the specialty of oculofacial plastic surgery.
